Facultative polyandry protects females from compromised male fertility caused by heatwave conditions

چکیده

Why is polyandry such a common mating behaviour when it exposes females to range of significant fitness costs? Here, we investigated whether protects against reduced male fertility caused by thermal stress from heatwave conditions. Sperm production and function are vulnerable heat, conditions forecast increase as our climate warms, so examined these effects on female reproduction in the flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, promiscuous ectotherm model which damaged environmental warming. We tested polyandrous matings, or sperm stores, protect conditions, flexibly adjust their remating enable rescue. found that protected fertility: monogamous matings with males exposed halved offspring production, but opportunities mate five allowed normal reproductive output. By contrast this improvement following opportunities, there was no protective benefit for already carrying stores multiple males, suffered similar damage within tract stores. Importantly, flexible condition, showing greater motivation remate new if previous had been exposure, enabling rapid Our results reveal enables rescue compromised phenomenon may become more prevalent under change.

Reduced fertility of Drosophila melanogaster hybrid male rescue (Hmr) mutant females is partially complemented by Hmr orthologs from sibling species.

The gene Hybrid male rescue (Hmr) causes lethality in interspecific hybrids between Drosophila melanogaster and its sibling species. Hmr has functionally diverged for this interspecific phenotype because lethality is caused specifically by D. melanogaster Hmr but not by D. simulans or D. mauritiana Hmr. Hmr was identified by the D. melanogaster partial loss-of-function allele Hmr1, which suppre...

Effects of polyandry on male phenotypic diversity.

Polyandry has the potential to affect the distribution of phenotypes and to shape the direction of sexual selection. Here, we explore this potential using Trinidadian guppies as a model system and ask whether polyandry leads to directional and/or diversifying selection of male phenotypic traits. In this study, we compare the phenotypic diversity of offspring from multiply and singly sired brood...

Hydrogen Protects Mice From Dermatitis Caused by Local Radiation

Background: Radiation therapy produced unwanted side effect on normal tissues, such as radiodermatitis. Hydrogen was previously shown capable of radiation protective in both animals and cell cultures. The effect of hydrogen was now to be investigated on radiation-induced cutaneous. Objective: Development of dermatitis is a frequent side effect of radiotherapy of patients with head-and-neck canc...

Regulation of male fertility by bone.

A broadly held view of bone is that it is a tissue defined by its mechanical and scaffolding properties, whose interaction with other organs of the body is similar to that exerted by an armor protecting them. In the last 10 years, using mouse genetics, this view of bone as an assembly of inert calcified tubes has considerably evolved to a much more dynamic picture. It is now clear that the skel...
